I was overjoyed to learn that Southern Voices is publishing Sabik, a story by Angelika Morano, one of the winners of the Saranggola Awards 2024. I feel like a proud mother celebrating her child’s achievement! In this story, we get to read about the thoughts of a baby in the womb. We discover how appreciative the baby is of its mother and how the baby’s tiny movements can be considered a form of language. A slow movement of the elbow— “I’m awake, Mommy.” A slight turn— “I’m here, Mommy, waiting for you to speak.” A gentle kick— “I can’t wait to see you, Mommy.”
A love language between mother and baby!
Through this story, I realized that two beings who have yet to meet can still express love for each other. While reading it, I became emotional—I remembered my mother, Tisay. Perhaps these were also the kinds of conversations we had while I was in her womb, I, her firstborn.
